Job Summary:

This position is an electrically qualified worker for Transmission equipment, and Transmission lines up to 500kV. The individual will perform construction and corrective/preventative maintenance functions under the guidance of a Transmission Foreman, Journey Level transmission lineman, or own direction.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:  (*essential job functions)

  • Climbs and works from steel towers, steel poles, and wood pole structures as necessary to install, maintain and inspect transmission facilities and similar appurtenances in substations.
  • Interprets engineering drawings, sketches and specifications to execute work functions. 
  • Performs rigging operations for installation and removal of electrical equipment.
  • Works from utility distribution poles (to 100 feet) and transmission/other structures to 500 feet as well as work out of aerial equipment (bucket trucks and/or high lift trucks or equipment).
  • Works on energized electrical equipment (live line glove-hand/hot-stick work) up to 500kV.
  • Performs transmission rights of way and transmission line inspections (foot patrols) both scheduled and emergent.
  • Operates small and large on and off-road vehicles (CDL required), various equipment including (backhoes, trenchers, dozers, aerial bucket trucks, digger, cable and wire puller/tensioners, rotating equipment like cap stands/winches, and high range lift trucks like a Bronto, etc.).
  • PECO LOTO qualified, meets substation entry requirements and is an electrically qualified worker for transmission equipment, lines and voltages up to and including 500kV.
  • Provides oversite for contractors performing work on transmission system.
  • Provides inspection and/or safety watchman services of contractor/customer personnel working on or near transmission lines and/or equipment.
  • Lead a small group of linemen for simple transmission tasks. Perform Foremen duties (Upgrade) for complex transmission tasks in the absence of foremen. Provide assistance to Foremen/Training to assist with training of various levels of transmission mechanics.
  • Site and install distribution mobile transformers including the construction of distribution terminal poles and connecting distribution cables.  


Note:  Required to work during storm and emergency situations, including distribution restoration tasks.  Must be available for on-call coverage and overtime.  Works in all weather conditions. Climbs structures over 400’.


Job Specifications:




Demonstrated ability in the skills necessary to install and maintain overhead transmission facilities.

Ability to safely operate power tools, equipment, drive small and large trucks.

Hold a valid driver’s license and meet Company driving standards. 

Hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A.

Satisfactory completion of the Construction and Skilled Trades Test.

Ability to work from engineering drawings, sketches and construction standards.

Be electrically qualified for voltages up to and including 500kV

LOTO qualified to hold all applicable permits relating to PECO electric permit and tagging procedures.

Satisfactory completion of PECO 1st class Overhead Transmission Mechanic test (written/physical)

Satisfactory completion of PECO approved rigging class to become a qualified rigger.

Successfully pass all required customer and governmental background requirements as to be able to obtain access to facilities e.g., Amtrak, Septa, TWIC, etc.



Successful completion of the PECO Transmission Line Mechanic Program Journey Level or IBEW certified equivalent journey level. Over 42-month job-related work experience or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience. HS diploma or equivalent
